SCHOTANUS-FOUNDATION

Last update of this page: 04/10/2010

The Schotanus-foundation is a voluntary organization and was founded in 1955 to try and compose the family-tree of all the Schotanuses all over the world. The history of the family goes back as far as the year 1385; the family-name refers to the village of Schoot in the province of Friesland in the North of the Netherlands.

The family-tree of almost all the branches of the family has been published in 18 booklets ‘Gens Schotana’, but the research is still going on.

The foundation publishes a 3-monthly family newspaper, called ‘Aldfaers Erf’. We also organize family reunions every spring somewhere in the Netherlands.

When you click on list you will find a list of all the Schotanuses ( and also Scholtanus and Schotanus á Sterringa), born since the year 1899. If your last (or maiden) name is Schotanus and you are not on the list, we know nothing about you. If that is the case, send an email to Mr. Jan Schotanus with some data and he will find the link to your roots.

Also, if you want to have more information, you know where you can always find him. Hoping to hear from you.

Van de voorzitter (From the chairman) It was quite an arrival in Franeker, there were fire brigades, firemen and ambulances. It was the 112-day on exercise in grand style. (112 is the alarm number, like 911 in the USA).The presentation of Gens Schotana #19 was the highlight of the familyday 2010. Franeker’s mayor, mr. Veenstra and author Jan Hengstmengel received a copy. Special thanks were for Jan Hengstmengel for all the work he had done to publish Gens Schotana  # 19.

Impressie van de Schotanus familiedag gehouden op 5-6-2010 te Franeker. (Impressions of the Schotanus family day  on June 5th 2010 in Franeker).

Mayor veenstra received us, we got coffee and cakes with the Schotanus coat of arms on it. In the impressive council hall our chairman Nanning offered the first copies of the latest Gens Schotana to the mayor and to the author Jan Hengstmengel.

After this, the participants went to restaurant De Doelen to have the annual meeting. The lunch was well provided and after that there was a very interesting presentation about that part of the family tree that is described in Gens Schotana #19 by Jan Hengstmengel. Altogether a memorable day.

Opsporing verzocht?.... en tot stand gekomen! (Tracing requested? ….and with a result!) Gerrit van de Akker tried to trace his friend Rob Schotanus. He contacted the Schotanus foundation and Coby de Haan found Rob’s widow.

The second person, that was looked for by somebody else, has also been traced.

Carambei, Parana, Brazilië (Brazil) Nanning continues his story about the visit to his daughter and her family. They emigrated some years ago to Brazil. In Brazil there is no spring nor autumn, it ‘s always summer, though the temperature in winter is a little lower.

Avonturen in vogelvlucht (Adventures in a bird’s eye view) On February 21st 2007 Wil went with two other birdwatchers to the very south of the Netherlands, near Maastricht, to see the largest European owl, the eagle owl (Latin name: Bubo bubo). When they had installed their instruments a couple came by and the man asked: “Well gentlemen, they are there again?” The man was invited to see through the telescope and while watching the owl, Wil watched the man. When both man and woman had looked through the telescope, they greeted and walked on. Then Wil asked his fellow watchers if they knew who that man was. As they shook their heads Wil revealed: “That was André Rieu, the world famous musician”. A very special bird to watch.
